Another Blacksburg Restaurant Closing
Here we go again, yet another Blacksburg restaurant is closing: Famous Anthony’s closes in Blacksburg.
Yes, the service there could be spotty at times, but they had the most inexpensive and best breakfast in Blacksburg, IMHO. Sigh. They blame First and Main and the economy, but no matter who or what is to blame, it is a loss for us breakfast lovers.
I feel like not many folks know about Famous Anthony’s and their yummy breakfast. So to encourage folks to try something new, I am going to focus on some restaurants in the area I really love – that are not chains (unless they are local chains). This is a short list of the great places around, so feel free to comment to add your favorites and a review! First, I am starting with Christiansburg restaurants.
Amelia’s Pizzeria & Restaurant
1130 Cambria St NE, Christiansburg, VA 24073-1606 – (540) 381-7878
Amelia’s is one of my favorites in Christiansburg. It is located in the Cambria section of Christiansburg. Yes, it looks like a dump on the outside, but have you noticed that many great Italian places are like that? First, there is the lunch buffet. It is more than pizza, but pasta, Philly cheese steaks, and more! The buffet is Monday – Saturday for lunch. The lunch and dinner menus are the same, with the exception of the buffet. From sandwiches to hearty meals, the choices are plentiful and so are the portions! The kids menu is pretty good as well. Desserts are wonderful! I have yet to have something unpleasant there. It is a great place to bring out-of-towners and the family. Alcohol is available. Closed Sundays. Prices are reasonable.
Pizza Inn
190 N Franklin St, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 382-4989
Best pizza buffet in the area. Cici’s has nothing on Pizza Inn. Great pizza choices: traditional pizzas, BLT, Taco, Buffalo Chicken, and for dessert chocolate chip pizza, strawberry cheesecake pizza, and more. Another great place for the family! Alcohol served.
Charlie’s Chinese Restaurant
35 W Main St, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 382-8899
I have not been here in years since Chinese is rarely a first choice for dinner for my family, but I do remember the service. The owners are great and really friendly!
Sub Shack
2767 Market St, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 382-2082
Pizza seems to be a theme here. Great subs and pizza. The zeppolis are wonderful – just the portion sizes are large. No alcohol served. Kids drinks are limited to the Pepsi fountain choices.
Dude’s Drive-In
505 Roanoke St, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 382-7901
Best burgers and hot dogs in town! Warning: a regular hot dog comes with chili. The food is served fast by servers coming to your car. No servers on roller skates though.
Cinco de Mayo
700 New River Rd, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 381-2125
Located in the mall, this Mexican restaurant is a favorite. The food is wonderful and the servers are a hoot. Alcohol served.
Custard Corner
101 S Franklin St, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 382-3504
Best frozen custard in the area. Period. Be ready to wait in a long line during hot days! Open seasonally.
Famous Anthony’s
6 Radford St, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 394-3335
Best breakfast.
Grama’s Goodies
600 Roanoke St, Christiansburg, VA – (540) 382-1320
Wonderful treats! Great sandwiches. Stop here for lunch or breakfast instead of a chain! Closes late afternoon.
Let me add one other place in Christiansburg for you to give a try if you like foods like Mac and Cheese, fried green tomatoes, banana pudding, and some of the best darned BBQ around. DUE SOUTH BBQ is located 1465 Roanoke St. Christiansburg. The have a webpage: http://www.duesouthbbq.com/ and they also do catering. Great people, great food! If you’re in the neighborhood at Cambria one day, drop by and I’ll buy ya lunch there:)
Awe come on now Ms. Lindstrom…..you’ve forgotten a staple of this town and its home town feel and home cooking. Country Kitchen!!Please add to your list!
I’m SO GLAD that Pizza Inn made this list. Truly, that this is a franchise of a “national brand (or at least a brand that extends to locales well beyond the greater NRV)” is, and SHOULD BE, considered SECONDARY to the importance it plays in this community.
Pizza Inn has been a long-standing favorite of mine. Not just because the food is, somehow, addicting, but because of the way it’s operated.
Stuart is a truly wonderful owner/operator. He has his thumb on the pulse of what is happening in the community around him, and runs his business accordingly. Believe me, I’ve been to other Pizza Inn franchises both near and far, and it’s sad to say, but they pale in comparison to the Christiansburg location. Stuart gets it RIGHT.
The only “sad” thing about Christiansburg’s Pizza Inn is the franchise “stigma.” Without that, and that ALONE, it is truly one of those “home town” businesses that you know and love, and ROOT FOR in the big picture.
Way to go, Stuart!!!
Amelias’ rocks! Our son has severe autism but when he goes there he is one happy boy! Buddy and all his staff treat our son with respect, dignity and acceptance.
He always gets the cheese pizza and chocolate cake .We take him at least every six weeks and it gives him incentive to do well at his many dr. visits.
We hope Buddy will live long and prosper!
